Item description from seller

The first three parts of Melchisedec Thevenot's 'Relations de Divers Voyages Curieux.' printed in Paris, chez Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1666, with the reissued title pages for that year in all three volumes. Text in French. These three volumes deal predominantly with the Middle and Far East including China, Japan, the Philippines, Egypt, India / Mogul Empire, Africa, East Indies, Australia etc. Folio, 3 volumes, uniformly bound in period continental full calf, spines gilt decorated between 6 raised bands. ondition: The books measure 24cm by 36cm. The bindings are holding firmly, hinges thinly or partially cracked but strongly held by the cords, spine ends chipped with loss, more extensive at head of Tom 1, some general rubbing to surface and extremities. Textblocks are holding firmly, contents generally in good clean condition if a little toned, with some scattered light to moderate foxing / browning, some damp marking, water staining at points in all volumes though nothing obtrusively disfiguring. Upper corners of most leaves in the second part have been repaired, with some loss encroaching into letterpress and, more notably, some engraved portions of the plates (not including the coastal charts). Old ink stamp to title leaves. Period plain endpapers, front free endpapers removed in second part. Further information or pictures can be provided on request. Please study the pictures carefully and feel free to ask any questions. The contents / pagination of each of the three volumes are as follows: Volume I : collation reads: [8], xxv, [3], 52, 26, 17-29, 26-31, 36-40, 12, 80, 30, 10, 19-24, 17-24, 35, [1], 52 [ie. 56]p. This volume contains 6 full page illustrations including 2 double page plates; 1 double page map: Vera Delineatio Civitatis Bassorae and 6 text illustrations. Volume II: collation reads: [12], 8, 17-20, 9-16, 48, 41, 46-60, 128, 14, 11-12, 17-40, 16, 48, 4, 30pp. With 5 folding coastal charts at pp.128; 1 plate at pp.44: Manierre de faire la Justice au Jappon; and 4 double page plates in the final part, also 3 text illustrations. Volume III: collation reads: [10], 31-68, 27, 34, 33-54, 57-8, 57-60, 59-76, 73-216, 12pp. With 1 folding map: Route du Voyage de Canton a Peking; and 11 plates present (4 of which are double page). These volumes represent the 1666 stage of Relations de Divers Voyages Curieux. The collation was checked against: Friedrich Adolf Ebert: A General Bibliographical Dictionary. Oxford University Press, 1837. #22880. The volumes are textually complete. There is a total of 2 maps, 27 plates and 9 text illustrations. Compared to Ebert this set lacks 1 or possibly 2 plates but also has 2 other plates not mentioned by Ebert. It noticably lacks 6 of the maps.
