The Quileute Dictionary is a contemporary dictionary for a very old language. Originally compiled by the most knowledgeable tribal members of two generations ago, this enlarged version includes terms and phrases like computer, manager, "no way", "Don’t screw it up", smug, "Give me five", "He turned me on", "the 49ers against the Seahawks", and "genius at work."
It is intended for Quileute schoolkids and as a reference sourcebook for adults (“What was our word for ‘sneeze’ again?”) But, most of all, this book gives us a sense that our heritage language is documented for all times. Quileutes young and old can hold this symbol of our group identity in their hands.
The Quileute language is not a sacred cultural secret. Hokwat` (non-Quileute) friends are encouraged to be as excited to have a source –book for the Quileute language as we Quileutes ourselves. After all, Quileute is one of the most interesting and distinctive languages in th world. It has explosive sounds, guttural back sounds and consonant that tie your tongue into knot. Quileute words can be 20 syllables long. And, Quileute isn’t related to any other living language… it’s called a
linguistic isolate. The alphabet used for writing Quileute was developed y the Quileute Culture Committee in the late 1960’s.
