These essays explore the meaning and history of eclecticism in the context of ancient philosophy and seek to provide more accurate descriptions of the work of such philosophers as Cicero, Philo of Alexandria, Plutarch, and the Neopythagoreans. They explore the distinctive character of intellectual enquiry at this timethe criterion of truth, the creative imagination, and the antecedents of our modern notion of the will. Collectively, these essays serve to dismiss the term eclecticism in its perjorative sense as a characterization of the philosophy of this period. What emerges as preoccupations of the period are the creative use of the intellectual tradition, the extension of philosophy into literary and scientific study, and the rational foundations of orthodoxy and heterodoxy. About the Author

J. M. Dillon is Regius Professor of Greek at Trinity College, Dublin. He is the author of The Middle Platonists (1977) and numerous other works of ancient philosophy. A. A. Long is Irving Stone Professor of Literature in the Department of Classics at the University of California, Berkeley. His many other books include Hellenistic Philosophy: Stoics, Epicurians, Sceptics (second edition), also available from California.
