Print on Demand. This book is a collection of the minutes of the Somerset Quarter Sessions during the period of the Commonwealth, from the reinstitution of the monarchy in 1646 to the Restoration in 1660. It grants a glimpse into how local government functioned during this turbulent time, bringing to light the various challenges faced by the justices of the peace. Despite the end of the civil war, the county still faced many difficulties, from repairing war-damaged infrastructure to dealing with the social and economic fallout of the conflict. The justices also had to contend with a variety of other issues, such as crime, poverty, and religious dissent. The book offers a unique perspective on the day-to-day running of a county during this period, shedding light on the lives of ordinary people and the challenges they faced. It also provides valuable insights into the development of local government and the evolution of English society during the 17th century. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

This volume contains two classes of records. Firstly, the Orders of the Court, which are entered in Minute Book No. IV, extending from the Bridgwater (michaelmas) Sessions, 1646, to the Wells (epiphany) Sessions of 1655-6 inclusive. This portion was transcribed by Mr. A. J. Monday, who has rendered valuable assistance in this, as in the two preceding volumes. Secondly, a calendar of the Sessions Rolls N 03. 93 to 98 inclusive, which contain matters relating to the business of the Quarter Sessions from 1656 to the Wells Sessions of 1659 - 60. There is no Minute Book for the period 1656 - 1666, and the Sessions Rolls for 1660 and 1661 are very scanty.
