Porto. 1849. In 4º de 20,7x13,5 cm. Com 332, [ii] págs. Brochado. In 4th. 20.7x13.5 cm. 332, [ii] pp. Paperback. Illustrated with statistical maps on Douro wine production. Copy mantains the original paperback covers. With minor paper loss at the corner of the pages from page 305 to the end. A very rare work that is not recorded by Inocêncio and of which there is only one copy catalogued in Porbase (database of the Portuguese National Library). Contains a detailed index to the 25 letters that constitute the work and an extensive erratum. The person to whom the anonymous author dedicates the work will be Manuel de Castro Pereira de Mesquita (Freixo de Numão, Villa Nova de Foscoa 1778 - Porto, 1863) He was chargé d'affaires at the court of Madrid in 1821 and minister of foreign affairs in 1837. He was major of the staff of the Portuguese legion in the service of the emperor Napoleon I and wrote a history of the said military corps. The author argues that the main cause of the crisis in wine growing, in the Douro region and the rest of the country, is the overproduction of low quality wines. Although he denounces that the wine trade was burdened by high taxes and customs duties, he argues that the removal of these costs would be more harmful than beneficial. It also presents great concern about the increase in population during periods of economic growth, which then during periods of crisis finds no means of subsistence. An important work for the study of the history of the Douro Region in the liberal period, very interesting for the careful style that the author uses, enriched with quotes and transcriptions of extracts from literary works.
