Paperback. At thirteen, Kye Anderson watched her father struggle to breathe. Within months he was gone - dead at forty-seven of a heart condition no one had diagnosed in time. The question that haunted her - why couldn't medicine have understood what was happening sooner? - became the thesis of a life's work.Purpose, Passion, Perseverance is the true story of building Medical Graphics Corporation from a dining room table into a publicly traded NASDAQ company. The breath-by-breath metabolic cart Anderson developed - a device that measured the body's response to physical stress in real time - became the global standard in cardiopulmonary diagnostics. Her technology established the cardiac transplant threshold first published in 1991 at the University of Pennsylvania, validated through decades of subsequent work at Columbia University, and still embedded in international medical guidelines today. The same technology is now being used to understand Long COVID and the invisible mechanisms behind persistent breathlessness. But this is not a hero's-victory book. After MGC's success, Anderson lost control of the company she had built. She writes with rare candor about what that cost - and about how she started again. eMed brought cardiopulmonary diagnostics online for primary care physicians. Medforma applied prevention-based diagnostic technology to population health. Each new venture moved further upstream toward the source of disease, away from the downstream crisis interventions that dominate American medicine. What sets the book apart is its specificity - the texture of building when nothing about the path was obvious. The aunt who taught Anderson the language of business before she knew what business was. The Catholic nun who taught her to see what others missed. The legendary entrepreneur who arrived only when she refused to take no for an answer. The engineers who said an idea was impractical and then built it anyway. The cardiologists and pulmonologists whose skepticism she earned her way past one demonstration at a time. The board negotiations that taught her what governance actually meant. The moment she realized she would have to let go of the company that had become part of her identity. In 1984, Esquire named her among "The Best of the New Generation: Men and Women Under Forty Who Are Changing America."Anderson captures, with the precision of someone who has done the work three times, that proximity to the problem you are solving is the entrepreneur's most undervalued advantage - that resilience is a practice rather than a trait - that the strongest companies emerge from constraints, not abundance - and that letting go of what you built is often the price of building what comes next. For readers building anything that matters - companies, careers, lives - this book offers both the example of a remarkable American entrepreneur and the framework she earned through forty years of practice. Endorsed by senior faculty at Stanford, Mount Sinai, Columbia, and the University of St. Thomas Schulze School of Entrepreneurship, Purpose, Passion, Perseverance is at once a memoir of medical innovation, a candid account of building and losing and building again, and an argument for why prevention deserves to be the next frontier of healthcare.
