Paperback. Most pump failures are not really mysteries. Behind almost every case of cavitation, seal leakage, bearing failure, or an underperforming system is a hydraulic or mechanical principle that was overlooked at the selection stage, ignored during commissioning, or missed during a routine inspection. If you specify, install, operate, or maintain pumps, you already know how expensive that gap between theory and practice can be, and how often pump knowledge is scattered across vendor manuals, standards documents, and hard-earned personal experience rather than organized in one place. This handbook closes that gap with a comprehensive, single-volume reference that follows the complete life cycle of a pumping asset: fluid properties, hydraulic fundamentals, pump curves and the affinity laws, centrifugal and positive-displacement design, a structured selection methodology, materials and corrosion, sealing technology, NPSH and cavitation, system curve analysis, installation and alignment, commissioning, operation, energy efficiency, preventive and predictive maintenance, vibration analysis, bearing and lubrication management, overhaul procedures, and root-cause failure diagnosis. Because every part is connected back to the same underlying hydraulic and mechanical principles, the book works equally well read cover to cover or consulted chapter by chapter.Inside, you will: Build and interpret system curves, pump curves, and the affinity laws with confidence, using worked examples with realistic industrial numbers in both US customary and SI units.Apply a structured, repeatable methodology for selecting between centrifugal and positive-displacement technology and for evaluating vendor curves and quotations on a genuinely comparable basis.Understand NPSH margin, cavitation mechanisms, and suction system design well enough to prevent the single most common cause of premature pump damage.Choose sealing technology, materials of construction, and bearing and lubrication practices that match the fluid and service conditions instead of defaulting to habit.Work through installation, alignment, and commissioning procedures that catch problems before a pump is ever started.Apply a symptom-to-cause troubleshooting reference and root-cause investigation framework to diagnose vibration, flow shortfalls, seal leakage, and overheating systematically rather than by guesswork.Build a reliability-centered maintenance and lifecycle cost program that shifts a pumping fleet from reactive repair to planned, cost-justified care. This handbook is written for mechanical and rotating-equipment engineers, plant reliability and maintenance engineers, operations and maintenance technicians, and engineering students preparing to work with industrial pumping systems. Structured checklists, comparison tables, decision worksheets, a glossary, unit-conversion tables, and a troubleshooting quick-reference matrix support both a first read-through and years of use as a working reference afterward.Every principle in this book is tied to a specific, practical consequence, so the connection between hydraulic theory and pump reliability stops being abstract. Begin building a structured, defensible approach to pump selection, operation, and maintenance, and start closing the gap between what you specify and what actually keeps running.
Because every part is connected back to the same underlying hydraulic and mechanical principles, the book works equally well read cover to cover or consulted chapter by chapter.
Inside, you will:
- Build and interpret system curves, pump curves, and the affinity laws with confidence, using worked examples with realistic industrial numbers in both US customary and SI units.
- Apply a structured, repeatable methodology for selecting between centrifugal and positive-displacement technology and for evaluating vendor curves and quotations on a genuinely comparable basis.
- Understand NPSH margin, cavitation mechanisms, and suction system design well enough to prevent the single most common cause of premature pump damage.
- Choose sealing technology, materials of construction, and bearing and lubrication practices that match the fluid and service conditions instead of defaulting to habit.
- Work through installation, alignment, and commissioning procedures that catch problems before a pump is ever started.
- Apply a symptom-to-cause troubleshooting reference and root-cause investigation framework to diagnose vibration, flow shortfalls, seal leakage, and overheating systematically rather than by guesswork.
- Build a reliability-centered maintenance and lifecycle cost program that shifts a pumping fleet from reactive repair to planned, cost-justified care.
This handbook is written for mechanical and rotating-equipment engineers, plant reliability and maintenance engineers, operations and maintenance technicians, and engineering students preparing to work with industrial pumping systems. Structured checklists, comparison tables, decision worksheets, a glossary, unit-conversion tables, and a troubleshooting quick-reference matrix support both a first read-through and years of use as a working reference afterward.
Every principle in this book is tied to a specific, practical consequence, so the connection between hydraulic theory and pump reliability stops being abstract. Begin building a structured, defensible approach to pump selection, operation, and maintenance, and start closing the gap between what you specify and what actually keeps running.
