Print on Demand. This book focuses on the theatrical arts, particularly the often-tumultuous relationship between the stage and the Church. The author, a minister, makes a case that theatre and the church can coexist and both serve their roles in society. This book is a defense of the theatre, not an apology for its perceived ills. The author believes that theatre can be a force for good in the world, and he wants to convince Christian leaders of this view. The book examines the opinions of religious figures about the theatre, and highlights stories of prominent clergy who have stood up for the profession. The author discusses the moral influence of the theatre, and its power to provide education and entertainment. He shows how the theatre has been a place of innovation and social change, and how it has helped to shape our culture. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history and impact of the theatre. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …

Let us turn from all this illogical nonsense to the sound common sense of Mr. Hall, m.p., and to the manly and muscular Christianity of the Rev. J. W. Horsley. Mr. Hall hit the right nail on the head when he urged that evil was to be found at the play because so many excellent people stayed away, and with undeniable truth he showed how necessary amusements were, and how much they might be purified by good example.
