nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Psychovertical is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive and psychologically raw books in modern climbing literature. First published in 2008, it won the Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature, placing it immediately among the leading works in the genre. At its core, the book is an autobiography framed around Kirkpatrick's thirteen-day solo ascent of the Reticent Wall on El Capitan-one of the most serious big-wall climbs ever completed by a British climber. Rather than presenting a straightforward narrative, the story unfolds in fragments: episodes from his troubled childhood, early climbing experiences, and increasingly extreme expeditions are interwoven with the unfolding solo climb. This structure reflects the mental state of the climber himself-fragmented, obsessive, and constantly oscillating between control and collapse. What sets Psychovertical apart is its focus not just on climbing, but on the psychology behind it. Kirkpatrick explores fear, compulsion, and self-destruction with unusual honesty. Reviewers frequently note how the book is driven by a constant proximity to death, with risk portrayed not as a by-product of climbing but as its currency. At the same time, the writing is laced with dark humour and self-awareness, creating a tension between absurdity and seriousness that keeps the narrative grounded. The book also examines the conflict between climbing and domestic life. Kirkpatrick writes candidly about the strain his ambitions place on his relationships, particularly the guilt of leaving his family for dangerous expeditions. This tension-between responsibility and obsession-forms the emotional centre of the work and gives it a broader resonance beyond climbing.Within climbing literature, Psychovertical occupies an important position. It moves away from the traditional heroic narrative of conquest and replaces it with something more introspective and uncomfortable. Alongside works by writers such as Joe Simpson and Paul Pritchard, it represents a shift toward psychological realism in mountaineering writing. Critics often describe it as both gripping and unsettling, notable for its honesty and its refusal to resolve the contradictions at its heart. In this way, Psychovertical stands not just as a climbing memoir, but as a study of risk, identity, and the uneasy motivations that drive people toward the edge.…
