Print on Demand. This book examines the psychological origins and social impact of reformism, specifically analyzing the anti-alcohol movement as a case study. The author contends that reformism is less about idealism and more about a psychological condition he terms "meddling hysteria," which arises from an inhibition of normal sexual life and manifests through a morbid interest in the private lives of others. Such inhibition fuels a desire to control and punish, which reformers satisfy through meddling in the lives of others. The author draws parallels between reformers and religious fanatics, highlighting their shared moral certitude and disregard for individual autonomy. Ultimately, this book challenges the notion of reform as a purely benevolent force, exposing the potential for hypocrisy and abuse within certain reformist movements. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The author examines reformism as a complex reaction to life, tracing its roots to deep-seated drives and early experiences. Grounded in Freudian ideas, the work blends case-like observations with theory to explain how inhibition, sexuality, and social pressures intertwine to fuel reform hysteria—and how psychoanalysis can contribute to social hygiene.
- Learn how personal history and unconscious motives influence public reform movements.
- See how psychoanalytic theory is applied to social issues like prohibition and reform activism.
- Discover historical context and thoughtful critique of reform strategies from a psychological perspective.
- Understand the proposed role of psychoanalysis in addressing societal perversions and promoting healthier social life.
Ideal for readers of psychology, social history, and critical theory who want a scholarly, accessible look at the intersection of mind and social change.
