Book Description N.P., Sandbornton, NH, 1836. Full Leather. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 310pp. + 272pp. Bound in a lovely full crushed leather with what amounts to three compartments on the backstrip stamped in gilt lettering and a diamond\floral device. All edges marbled. The binding is contemporary to the period. Stereotyped by T.H. Carter & Co. of Boston, MA (according to the title page on the second volume). Watts holds an important place in the history of hymnody since he, ".treated his subject matter with more freedom than his predecessors, who had sought above all else a literal rendering. Although some opposed his verses, they were eventually regarded in many quarters as almost the equivalent of Holy Writ" (Hughes American Hymns Old and New page 588). Faint pencil notation on the front pastedown, but no identifiable ownership inscriptions. Three corners gently bumped. Extremities rubbed, but only one corner rubbed through. Some foxing. Easily the loveliest Watts hymnal we've handled in terms of the condition of the binding. A search of the OCLC\Worldcat yields no matches for this edition in institutional holdings. Size: 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 011933
