Add to basketBen Pryor's passion for training horses oozes from his very marrow. Because most trainers are enslaved in the Early American South, Ben's father sees only a character flaw. Especially in one descended from the colonial Virginia elite. Once he flees his home, Ben vows to prove everyone wrong. Amidst the fervor of westward expansion, obscene wealth from 'king cotton,' duels across the river, yellow fever, and a rising bitterness between the North and South, a zeal for horse racing binds the young nation together. While the underbelly of slavery taints it all. Determined to stay untouched by politics, Ben keeps his head down and his focus strong. But in a country churning with change and an uncertain future, can he ignore the friction that sparks and flashes around him? Should he follow the law? Or do what's right? How can he choose? Based on real and fictional characters from the early 1800s, PRYOR KNOWLEDGE carries readers through the gumbo of charm and debauchery that was the lower Mississippi River.

A sweeping novel of ambition, honor, and conscience set in the glittering—and deeply divided—world of the antebellum South.
“The journey of a moral man in an immoral world that he struggles to comprehend.”
— The Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award
Along the lower Mississippi River in the early 1800s, the high-stakes world of horse racing flourishes within the brutal institution of slavery. It is here Ben Pryor pursues his dream of becoming one of the nation's finest trainers—until the country's deep divisions become impossible to outrun.
Determined to stay removed from the nation’s growing divisions, he keeps his head down and his focus sharp. But when love upends his carefully laid plans, Ben is forced to confront a question he can no longer avoid: should he obey the law—or do what is right?
Drawing on real people and historical events, PRYOR KNOWLEDGE is character-driven historical fiction that confronts America’s past with honesty and heart. Perfect for fans of Horse by Geraldine Brooks and The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead.
“A must-read for horseracing fans. Gibson provides a beautifully researched story of the times and historical figures surrounding champion Lexington’s career. I found her novel to be superbly written and a real page-turner!”
—Sasscer Hill, winner of the Dr. Tony Ryan Award for Best Book in Racing Literature
“M. B. Gibson sheds new light on the fast-paced world of horseracing in the antebellum South. But this is no mere horse tale. Based on actual events, it’s also a gripping story about love, honor, slavery, and evil in a country on the edge of civil war.”
—Paul Davis, Pulitzer Prize–nominated journalist and author
