Print on Demand. This book revolves around the topic of slavery in the United States during the mid-19th century, particularly in the context of the territories. The author delves into constitutional principles, property rights, and the political debates surrounding the issue of slavery. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of the arguments for and against the protection of slave property in the territories, examining the viewpoints of both proponents and opponents. The author argues that slave owners have a constitutional right to take their property into the territories and have it protected, and that the federal government is obligated to provide such protection if the territorial legislatures fail to do so. The book also explores the broader historical context of slavery in the United States, including the Missouri Compromise and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Through a detailed examination of speeches, debates, and legal cases, the author sheds light on the complex and often conflicting views on slavery that shaped the nation's history. The book's insights contribute to a deeper understanding of this pivotal issue and its lasting impact on American society. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Political Theory and History
This historical work compiles a defining speech by Hon. A. G. Brown of Mississippi, defending his call for immediate congressional protection of slave property in new territories. It presents the senator’s legal and constitutional arguments during a pivotal pre–Civil War debate, including comparisons between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, and responses to critics who favored non-intervention.
The text also includes accompanying material that shows how these arguments intersected with real events in Kansas and the broader fight over slavery in new territories, shaping the political climate of 1860. It features passages from Brown’s discussion, exchanges with peers, and an appendix that introduces a proposed act focused on protecting slave property in Kansas.
- Learn how sectional tensions shaped legislative language and constitutional interpretation on slavery in the territories.
- See the kinds of legal reasoning used to frame slavery as a political and constitutional issue in 1860.
- Read direct excerpts of debate, including responses to critics and the framing of federal power vs. state decisions.
- Explore the appendix with a proposed act and the surrounding context of the era’s legislative dialogue.
Ideal for readers of historical political speeches, Civil War era history, and debates over federal protection of property in the territories.
