Item description from seller

large 4to. paper wrapper. (8) pages. NOTE: THIS IS FOR THE PROSPECTUS ONLY. A fine copy. Color specimen and order form loosely inserted. Melbert B. Cary (1892-1941), the founder of Continental Typefounders and operator of the Press of the Woolly Whale, also acquired a collection of well over 1,000 full or partial sets of standard playing cards from the U.S. and most European countries along with China and several others, about 200 uncut sheets of standard playing cards and 30 blocks or plates for printing of standard cards, and roughly an equal number of items for nonstandard cards, along with various playing card ephemera: pack wrappers, tax stamps, coloring stencils, advertisements, etc. Cary's motive was a wish to represent the range of playing card design and production, and not primarily antiquarian. He nonetheless acquired such things as wood-block cards, tarot cards from the 15th century, and various 16th-century rarities. Upon the death of Mary F. Cary, his wife, in 1967 the collection was given to the Yale University Library. The first two volumes comprise the actual catalogue with 2,872 entries for items in the above categories, including 2,393 entries for cards or sets of cards. Entries for cards indicate origins and physical characteristics, structure and degree of completeness of the set and features of specific cards, and provide notes and references. The introduction in volume I discusses the Cary Collection in general, other important card collections, provides an overview of card suits and a glossary for standard and nonstandard card types and other concepts, a list of references, and explains the interpretation of entries. With photographic illustrations of about 7,160 selected cards, and illustrations for the uncut sheets, blocks and other materials.
