"The Prophets of Israel in History and Criticism" is a scholarly examination of the prophetic tradition of ancient Israel, analyzed through the dual lenses of historical context and textual criticism. Written by Harold M. Wiener, a distinguished scholar of biblical law, this work engages directly with the theological and academic debates of the early twentieth century. Wiener meticulously explores the roles and messages of the Hebrew prophets, situating them within the broader political and religious landscape of their time.

The volume serves as a critical response to the prevailing trends in biblical studies, particularly the school of "higher criticism." Wiener provides a robust defense of the authenticity and historical integrity of the prophetic writings, challenging contemporary theories about the development of the Hebrew Bible. By synthesizing legal analysis with historical inquiry, "The Prophets of Israel in History and Criticism" offers a unique perspective on the evolution of Israelite monotheism and the foundational impact of prophetic thought on Jewish and Western tradition. This work remains a valuable resource for students of theology, history, and ancient literature, providing deep insights into the spiritual and social forces that shaped the Old Testament.
