Paperback. Sibyl Trimble makes a promise to her father when she is a young girl that she will be part of a socialist political movement to change the world. From a wealthy banking family in Shawnee, Oklahoma, she is comfortable with fashionable clothes, cruising in a new Chrysler, and dancing at the local speakeasy. Even the Depression cannot put a damper on her comfortable lifestyle. By 1932, the timing to fulfill the promise to her father seems right. Then she meets a handsome, blue-eyed, down-on-his-luck hobo and her life is turned upside down. The more she gets to know him, the more she learns about her world, her purpose, and God. Her love for him opens her eyes to a different way of life than she has ever known. Based on a true story, this novel follows Sibyl through some difficult choices. She must dig deep within herself to find the strength to face her upbringing and determine which, if any, of her past beliefs can be salvaged. She must decide which is most important, love or duty. Sibyl, a young banker's daughter, has promised to follow her father in leading the country. Then she falls in love with a down-on-his-luck hobo and her world changes. Can she break from her wealthy father's beliefs and find God in the midst of her troubles? "Exceptionally well written, making it a consistently compelling read from beginning to end.“ One of those rare stories that will linger in the mind and memory of the reader long after the book itself has been finished." James A. Cox, Editor-in-Chief, Midwest Book Review. IDPA, Reviewer's Choice.
Sibyl Trimble has always lived a life of comfort. As the daughter of a prominent Oklahoma banker and an eager supporter of her father's socialist ideals, she’s grown up in fine clothes, fast cars, and speakeasy jazz—even as the Great Depression rattles the world around her.
But everything changes when she meets Fremont, a blue-eyed drifter with a quiet strength and a past full of hardship. Drawn to his faith and resilience, Sibyl begins to question the foundation of the life she’s always known. As their connection deepens, so does her inner struggle—between loyalty to her father’s vision and the pull of a love rooted in something far deeper than politics.
Set against the stark realities of 1930s Oklahoma, A Promise to Break is a story of awakening—of one woman’s journey to discover truth, purpose, and a love that challenges everything she thought she believed. In the end, Sibyl must choose: cling to the world she was born into or step into the one her heart knows is right.

“An excellent historical novel of girls/women coming of age in the dirty 30s. A must read for young adults to gain perspective of the Depression era, and an understanding what their grandparents experienced.” Independent Book Publishers Association
