What if you could build software that is not only fast, but also predictable, memory-conscious, concurrent, and reliable? What if you could write modern systems-level applications without constantly choosing between performance and safety? And what if one language could help you reason more clearly about ownership, resources, threads, and architecture from the beginning?
Programming Rust for Systems Engineers by Kristian G. Schmitt is designed around those questions.
Are you an engineer working with performance-critical applications? Are you tired of chasing elusive memory bugs, race conditions, unnecessary overhead, or fragile system components? Do you want to understand how systems can take advantage of low-level control while maintaining guarantees? If so, where should you begin—and how can you turn Rust’s concepts into practical engineering skills?
This book takes you into the core ideas behind building high-performance applications with Rust, using a systems-engineering perspective. Rather than treating the language as merely another programming syntax, it explores how Rust’s ownership model, borrowing rules, concurrency tools, memory control, and architectural principles can influence the way you design and implement real software.
Have you ever wondered why memory safety becomes so difficult as applications grow? How do ownership and borrowing change the way you think about resource management? What happens when multiple threads need to work simultaneously without introducing unpredictable behavior? How can you structure components so that performance does not come at the cost of maintainability?
You will explore these questions while developing a stronger mental model for writing dependable systems.
The journey connects language fundamentals with engineering decisions. You’ll examine how ownership and lifetimes help establish clear relationships between data and resources, how concurrency can be approached systematically, and how careful memory management can support efficient execution. You’ll also consider how reliable architecture emerges from thoughtful boundaries, modular components, error handling, and deliberate design choices.
But can you go beyond making code compile? Can you measure performance instead of guessing? Can you recognize architectural bottlenecks before they become expensive problems? Can you design software that remains understandable when requirements, workloads, and teams change?
This book encourages you to think like a systems engineer—not merely a programmer.
Whether you are moving toward Rust from another systems language, strengthening your engineering practice, or seeking an understanding of high-performance application development, the material is structured to help you connect concepts with practical reasoning.
What would become possible if your applications could combine speed, safety, controlled resource usage, and dependable architecture? What could you build with greater confidence if you understood not just how Rust works, but why its design matters?
The opportunity is yours to find out.
Start building with greater control. Strengthen your systems-engineering skills. Discover how Rust can help you create high-performance applications that are designed for reliability from the ground up.
If you’re ready to move beyond ordinary application development and approach software with a deeper understanding of performance, memory, concurrency, and architecture, pick up Programming Rust for Systems Engineers by Kristian G. Schmitt today—and begin building systems with purpose, precision, and confidence.

Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.
Information regarding the right of withdrawal
Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to California Books, Fort Wayne, Indiana, U.S.A., without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
