Print on Demand. This book investigates the role of neutrons in radiotherapy, particularly regarding high-energy megavoltage x-ray and electron therapy. The author reviews the history of neutron research in the field, from their accidental discovery as a by-product of x-ray technology to the present day. Measured levels and potential risks are examined, and methods of reducing neutron production are explored. The author argues that it is more important to focus on improving treatment beams and reducing surface doses than on eliminating neutrons entirely. The book concludes with a discussion of potential future developments in radiotherapy, including improvements in dose delivery precision and the use of CT scanning. The author's insights offer valuable guidance for medical professionals seeking to optimize radiotherapy techniques and improve patient outcomes. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

I appreciate very much the privilege of speaking at the initiation of this important con ference on neutrons from medical accelerators. This conference has attracted participation by most, if not all, of the experts in this field and it is likely that the work to be reported here will lead to a resolution of this problem. We are all concerned with the problem which con fronts those employing high-energy x-rays and electrons for treatment: that of the proper evaluation of the role of the associated neutron contamination. Before adding my comments on the inherent neutron additive to megavoltage therapy, I should like to review something of the frame of reference of this problem.
