This book offers a comprehensive exploration of the critical issues surrounding the sustainable development goals outlined by the United Nations—SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation and SDG 13: Climate action, delving into the multifaceted challenges and innovative solutions that define these vital fields. Through a blend of scholarly analysis, case studies, and practical insights, this book provides a holistic understanding of the complex interplay between water resource management, sanitation infrastructure, and the transformative potential of civil engineering in fostering climate resilience and sustainability. It examines the global water crisis, highlighting disparities in access to clean water and sanitation services while exploring the socioeconomic, environmental, and health implications of inadequate water and sanitation provision.
Drawing upon the expertise of leading experts in the field of civil engineering, environmental science and engineering, public health, and policy, this book elucidates the role of technology, governance, and community engagement in advancing the SDG 6 and SDG 13 agenda. It showcases innovative approaches to water treatment, wastewater management, and sanitation solutions, spotlighting best practices and lessons learned from diverse contexts around the world. Additionally, the book underscores the interconnectedness of water and sanitation with other sustainable development goals, emphasizing the importance of integrated approaches and interdisciplinary collaboration. By providing a roadmap for effective climate action, grounded in science, innovation, and collaboration, this book also aims to empower civil engineers to become catalysts for positive change in the fight against climate change.

Dr. Priya Krishnamoorthy Lekshmi Ammal is an associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, Kerala, India. She is a renowned researcher in estuarine studies and her research interests include estuarine contaminant dynamics, flocculation and settling of suspended sediments, groundwater quality, water and wastewater treatment, and microplastics dynamics and abatement. To her credit, she has over 70 international publications in reputed journals/book chapters, over 37 papers in conferences and the recipient of Charles Boyden Award of Estuarine and Coastal Sciences Association UK, apart from several Best Paper Awards. She has completed 10 funded research/consultancy projects, guided 4 IAESTE interns, 4 research scholars and over 50 undergraduate/graduate projects. She has a wide network connection in the international arena, including USA, Japan, Philippines, Morocco, Brazil, South Korea, Vietnam, Croatia, Mozambique, which is evident from her publications with several universities abroad.
Dr. Brajesh Kr. Dubey is a professor of Resource Recovery and Circular Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering and Chair of the School of Water Resources at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP), India. With over 20 years of post-Ph.D. experience, he is internationally recognized for his expertise in waste management, life cycle analysis (LCA), and decarbonization. His research focuses on sustainable and resilient systems, decarbonization, circular economy, and science-based environmental policy, addressing the intersections of waste, energy, health, infrastructure, and the environment. His work has been supported by organizations such as UNIDO, National Geographic Society, OECD, WRI, NSERC, DST India, and others across North America, Europe, and Asia.
Dr. Ali Danandeh Mehr holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Istanbul Technical University (Turkey). He is a professor at the Civil Engineering Department of Antalya Bilim University, Turkey. He has also worked as an adjunct researcher at the Excellent Center for Hydroinformatics (University of Tabriz, Iran), MEU Research Center (Middle East University, Jordan), and as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering Research Unit (University of Oulu, Finland). Prof. Dr. Danandeh Mehr has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals, six books, and seven chapters. Since 2019, he has been listed among the World’s Top 2% Scientists in the field of environmental engineering released by Stanford University/SCOPUS. He was also among the Top 1% of the World’s Highly Ranked Scholars (2022, 2023) in the specific fields of genetic programming, forecasting, and programming models released by ScholarGPS™. He is the associate editor for the Discover Water (Springer) and J. Civil. Env. Eng. (University of Tabriz) and collaborates as a guest editor/reviewer for different international scholarly journals. His current research focuses on stochastic hydrology, hydroinformatics, extreme hydrologic events, natural hazards, and climate change impacts on water resources.
