This volume serves as a study guide and revision resource for postgraduate students preparing for examinations in nuclear medicine physics. The problems and solutions presented reflect the typical syllabi adopted by universities and training programmes worldwide. This invaluable study guide should be used in conjunction with other key textbooks in the field to provide additional learning opportunities.
Since the publication of the first edition, nuclear medicine has continued to advance rapidly, with significant developments in hybrid imaging systems, detector technologies, image reconstruction algorithms, quantitative imaging, radionuclide therapy and dosimetry methodologies. In response to these developments, the second edition has been carefully reviewed and updated. Existing problems have been refined, solutions have been strengthened and expanded where appropriate, and selected content has been revised to better reflect current clinical practice and evolving standards.
One hundred and forty-seven solved problems are presented across ten chapters covering core topics, including radioactivity and nuclear transformations, production and properties of radionuclides and radiopharmaceuticals, radiation detectors and instrumentation, gamma camera imaging, SPECT and PET-CT imaging techniques, radionuclide therapy and theragnostics, internal radiation dosimetry, quality control and radiation protection in nuclear medicine. The problems are designed to illustrate and augment the underlying theory, while reinforcing fundamental principles to enhance learning and information retention.
This book forms part of a four-volume set of medical physics problems and solutions. The companion volumes address diagnostic imaging physics, radiotherapy physics and radiation protection.
Features:
- Consolidates concepts and assists in the understanding and applications of theoretical concepts in medical physics
- Suitable as a revision tool for postgraduate students sitting medical physics, radiation oncology, and radiology science examinations
- Each chapter provides examples, notes, and references for further reading to enhance understanding.

About the Author
Kwan Hoong Ng, PhD, DABMP, FIUPESM, received his MSc (medical physics) from the University of Aberdeen and PhD (medical physics) from the University of Malaya, Malaysia. He is certified by the American Board of Medical Physicists. Professor Ng was honoured as one of the top 50 medical physicists in the world by the International Organization of Medical Physics (IOMP) in 2013. He also received the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Award in 2018. He has authored/co-authored over 300 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 40 book chapters and co-edited 15 books.
Chai Hong Yeong, PhD, FIUPESM, FIOMP, is a professor of medical physics at Taylor’s University, Malaysia, and an international leader in the medical physics profession. She currently serves as President of the Southeast Asia Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (SEAFOMP) and Chair of the Medical Physics World Board of the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP).
Alan Christopher Perkins, PhD, HonFRCP, MBE is Professor Emeritus of Medical Physics in the School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham. After completing a PhD in radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies at Nottingham University, he carried out extensive research with clinical, academic and industrial collaborators in nuclear medicine, gastroenterology, radiopharmacology, drug delivery and radiation protection. This resulted in numerous invited presentations at international conferences, authorship of over 250 peer-reviewed journal articles and publications of five textbooks and one popular science book.
