Item description from seller

Nature, 113. - June 21 and 28, 1924, 8°, 14 pp., 8 Fig., orig. wrappers. Rare Offprint! "In his 1924 Linacre Lecture, Sherrington postulated that small- and large-diameter motor neuron axons might serve different functions, although this was missed by subsequent studies. Indeed, the functional significance of the reflex arc - which consists of small anterior horn nerve cells (y-motor neurons) and their smaller diameter fibres (intrafusal fibres, which elicit contraction of intrafusal fibres of the muscle spindle and thereby initiate afferent impulses to motor neurons) - was not understood until much later. The role of the y-motor neurons and of their actions on muscle spindles subsequently became the subject of intense studies by Sherrington and others." Zoltán Molnár & Richard E. Brown: Insights into the life and work of Sir Charles Sherrington. Neuroscience, 11 (June 2010): pp.429-436 Sir Charles Scott Sherrington's (1857-1852) research; "laid the foundations for modern neurophysiology. He maintained that the most important function of the nervous system in higher animals is the coordination of the various parts of the organism. Although best known for his long series of studies on spinal reflexes; he made equally great strides in the physiology of perception; reaction; and behaviour. He was the first to adequately study the synapse and originated the term. He also introduced the term exterioceptor; proprioceptor and viscerocepter. In 1932 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Edgar Douglas Adrian." whonamedit.…
