Hardcover, x + 186 pages, NOT ex-library. Interior is clean and bright throughout with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. A straightened corner fold on a few leaves. Boards show extensive scuffing to the edges, creases, scratches, bumps and indentations, small areas of damage. Issued without a dust jacket. -- Originally published in 1928, this study addresses a question that was then gaining urgency across industrialised economies: how should the state relate to the growing power of monopolistic combines? Gordon's work stands out as one of the earliest English-language examinations of the German experience of organised monopoly, drawing on the cartel and trust structures that had come to define much of German industry by the early 20th century. The analysis moves between the practical realities of industrial concentration and the broader political and economic principles at stake, weighing the potential efficiencies of large-scale combination against the risks of unchecked corporate power. The book considers how different regulatory approaches - from laissez-faire tolerance to active state intervention - shaped the behaviour of trusts and combines, with particular attention to the tensions between private profit and the public interest. Gordon examines not only the German model but also developments in Britain and the United States, offering a comparative perspective on how nations were grappling with the same fundamental problem. Though written nearly a century ago, the themes explored here remain strikingly relevant. Contemporary debates around Big Tech dominance, market concentration and the adequacy of antitrust frameworks echo many of the concerns Gordon raised about the relationship between monopolistic enterprise and democratic governance. For scholars and students of industrial economics, competition policy and economic history, this reissue provides valuable context for understanding how early twentieth-century thinking on monopoly control continues to inform present-day policy discussions.…

This book, first published in 1928, was written at a time when the tendency in industry was towards the formation of large combines. With competition growing as markets and methods of communication grew, many manufacturers considered their only option was to unite in self-defence, setting up a movement that restrictive legislation was unable to check. This book analyses the proper relations between monopolistic combines and the State, and was the first to examine the German experience of organised monopoly, and the means used to prevent it from becoming a mere protection for inefficient producers.
