Print on Demand. This book explores the fundamental principles upon which the religious life rests, from scientific and philosophical perspectives. The author feels that the religious consciousness is still a robust and vital force in our lives and is worth reexamination in light of our expanding knowledge. The author aims to trace out, in a way consonant with current knowledge, the natural implications of common scientific experience, in order to determine what justification can be given for a religious conception of the world. The book ultimately comes down to the question of optimism and pessimism, as the author examines whether the forces that govern the universe are ultimately beneficent or maleficent. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

This book is the property of Harvard University, and I wish here to express my thanks to President Lowell, and to Professor Bliss Perry, chairman of the committee on the administration of the Bowdoin Prize, for permission to print it in the present form. My best thanks are also due to my former student, Miss Helen Ingham, for reading the proof of the book, and to my wife, Grace Gridley Wilm, for the same service, and for removing a num ber of foreign idioms which would otherwise have marred my pages.
