Print on Demand. This book delves into the philosophical ideas of Augustine, an influential theologian and philosopher of antiquity, on the perplexing problem of evil. The author meticulously examines Augustine's writings to dissect his intricate conception of the relationship between God, the source of all existence, and the origins of evil. By analyzing Augustine's exploration of the nature of evil as a deficiency or negation rather than a substantial entity, the book sheds light on the evolution of Augustine's ideas over time. The author skillfully situates Augustine's ideas within the context of significant historical debates and philosophical controversies, particularly his vehement opposition to the Manichean doctrine of evil as a co-eternal entity alongside God. This book offers profound insights into Augustine's complex and nuanced understanding of evil, a subject that has intrigued philosophers and theologians throughout history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Two concise chapters frame a critique of established views and sketch why a revised theory of sin must account for universal guilt and individual responsibility. The author foregrounds how freedom, grace, and the will have been treated across debates and what a new synthesis might require.
- Examines the historical debate over free will, grace, and the origin of sin.
- Clarifies how evil is defined, its relation to human nature, and the idea of original sin.
- Discusses the role of evolution and the unity of humanity in forming a fresh approach.
- Outlines a framework that stresses both solidarity of mankind and personal accountability.
Ideal for readers of philosophy, theology, and the history of ideas who want a clear, evidence-based critique and a path toward a revised view.
