"Six Prisons and Two Revolutions" is a gripping first-hand account of the tumultuous political landscape of Trans-Caucasia and Anatolia during the early 1920s. Written by Oliver Baldwin, who served as a military advisor in the region, the narrative details his harrowing experiences amidst the collapse of empires and the rise of new revolutionary powers. The work provides a rare, eyewitness perspective on the fall of the independent Republic of Armenia and the subsequent expansion of Soviet influence, alongside the growing nationalist movement in Turkey.
Through a series of incarcerations and narrow escapes, Baldwin describes the brutal realities of political upheaval and the complexities of regional conflict following the First World War. His account serves as both a personal adventure and a vital historical document, capturing the social and cultural tensions of a territory caught between the Bolsheviks and the forces of Mustafa Kemal. "Six Prisons and Two Revolutions" offers deep insights into the geopolitical shifts of the Near East, making it an essential text for readers interested in military history, diplomatic relations, and the enduring struggle for stability in the Caucasus. Baldwin's observations remain a powerful testament to the human cost of ideological warfare during a pivotal era of the twentieth century.
