This book ‘’Print Reading Handbook for Construction 2026’’ is your complete, practical guide to reading, interpreting, and applying every type of construction document — explained in plain language, grounded in real-world field practice, and current to the technologies and codes defining how buildings are designed and built today. This handbook was written for you if you are:
- A construction student who wants drawing literacy connected to real professional decisions
- A project manager or superintendent who needs complete drawing fluency — not just the sheets your trade produces
- An architect, engineer, or BIM coordinator who wants construction professionals to understand what you draw
- A general contractor managing multi-discipline coordination on complex commercial projects
- A facility manager preparing for renovations who needs to read as-built drawings and understand what is inside your walls
- A self-taught builder or serious construction professional seeking the most comprehensive print reading education available
Inside, You Will Learn How To:
- Read every major drawing type with complete confidence — floor plans, elevations, building sections, wall sections, site plans, structural plans, foundation drawings, MEP plans, and large-scale details
- Decode every line type, symbol, abbreviation, and material hatch pattern used across all drawing disciplines — the complete visual vocabulary of construction documentation
- Work with scales, dimensions, and construction mathematics to extract accurate measurements and material quantities from any drawing
- Navigate civil and site drawings — property lines, setbacks, easements, grading plans, contour lines, utility layouts, and erosion control documentation
- Interpret structural drawings for every system — spread footings, grade beams, piles, slab-on-grade, wood framing, structural steel, concrete framing, rebar layouts, and structural connection details
- Read concrete and reinforcement drawings — pour sequences, control joints, lap splice requirements, cover dimensions, formwork plans, post-tensioned systems, and precast elements
- Navigate large-scale commercial drawing sets, industrial P&IDs, multi-story stacking coordination, and the demolition and as-built drawings of renovation projects
- Work fluently in the digital construction environment — navigating cloud-based drawing platforms, reading BIM-generated views and 3D outputs, using digital markup tools, and managing drawing revisions
- Prepare for the future of construction documentation — AI-generated drawings, augmented reality job site verification, digital twins, and the professional development strategies that keep any career ahead of the curve. AND MORE!
Bonus Field Companion:
- Master Symbol Index
- Construction Abbreviations Glossary
- Scales and Conversion Chart
- Print Reading Checklist
This is not a traditional textbook that teaches you to recognize symbols and move on. Every chapter builds on the previous one the way a building is constructed — from the ground up, from the foundation drawings through the structural frame, the architectural envelope, the MEP systems, and the modern digital tools that now govern how all of it is documented and coordinated.
If you are ready to read construction documents the way the best professionals in the industry do — completely, confidently, and with the full understanding that transforms a drawing from lines on a page into a building in the real world — this is your essential guide.
Scroll up and get your copy today — and start reading the language that every great building is written in.

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free.
