Although climate change is reducing the extent of sea ice in the polar region, it also enlarges the operation time window and enables more ships to choose routes where ice is prevalent. Global increases in maritime trade additionally factor into this. The number of polar ships is on the increase and the total exposure to sea ice is growing significantly. Ships sailing through ice-covered regions need to be powerful enough to overcome the additional resistance and strong enough to withstand impact with ice. The methodology of designing polar ships, therefore, differs from that for open-water ships.
This book is the first undergraduate and graduate textbook to introduce this topic, ideally for courses on polar ship technology or winter navigation. It sets out the formation process of sea ice, and its physical and mechanical properties, then describes the interaction process between ships and ice for estimating ice load. It introduces methods to evaluate ship performance in ice, including attainable speed and maneuverability, then establishes reliable polar ship rules, especially requirements for ice-strengthening. It sets out experimental methods, both model-scale and full-scale tests, and numerical simulation of ice loading and ship performance.

About the Author
Pentti Kujala is an emeritus professor of marine technology at the Helsinki University of Technology and at Aalto University, Finland. At Aalto University he has served as leader of the Marine and Arctic Technology Research Group, and has also led the Arctic Maritime Operations and Maritime Excellence Research Unit. He has received the European Transport Research Board TRAVISIONS Award for his work to improve the safety of ships in the Baltic Sea and the Arctic.
Fang Li is an associate professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, specializing in polar marine engineering and structural integrity, and has served as a guest lecturer at Cranfield University and a visiting scholar at University College London.. He is also an active member of OMAE’s Polar Symposium and China’s Marine Ice Committee.
Mikko Suominen is an assistant professor at Aalto University, Finland and an expert in ship performance in ice-covered waters and ice-induced loads on ship hulls, with a particular focus on measurement techniques and model-scale testing.
Li Zhou is a research professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where he leads the Polar Equipment Technology Team. He previously worked at Aker Solutions in Norway as an engineer and project manager. He has received the China Shipbuilding Industry Science and Technology Award and the China Institute of Navigation Science and Technology Award, and is an active member of the POAC Committee.
