Curious about how robotic-assisted surgery works and how it is changing modern surgical practice? Whether you are a medical student, surgical trainee, or healthcare professional, understanding robotic surgery can help you develop a stronger foundation in one of the most important technological developments in modern operating rooms.
Robotic-assisted surgery involves more than advanced machines and specialized instruments. It requires careful planning, knowledge of surgical anatomy, precise instrument control, effective teamwork, and a constant commitment to patient safety. Knowing how these elements work together is essential for anyone seeking to understand this approach to surgery.
Principles of Robotic General Surgery: A Quick Guide by Dr. Denial R. Whitmore provides a practical introduction to the systems, techniques, and safety principles behind robotic-assisted general surgery. Written in clear, accessible language, this guide helps you understand the technology without getting lost in unnecessarily complicated explanations.
WHAT YOU WILL FIND INSIDE THIS BOOKInside this guide, you will explore the essential concepts and practical considerations that shape robotic-assisted general surgery, including:
-
Fundamentals of Robotic Surgery: Understand what robotic-assisted surgery means, how it works, and how it differs from traditional open and laparoscopic procedures.
-
Robotic Surgical Systems and Equipment: Learn about the surgeon's console, robotic arms, camera systems, specialized instruments, and their functions.
-
Surgical Techniques and Procedures: Gain an introduction to selected robotic-assisted general surgical procedures, including hernia repair and colorectal surgery.
-
Instrument Handling and Visualization: Learn why camera control, controlled movements, anatomical awareness, and careful tissue handling matter.
-
Patient Safety and Complication Prevention: Review important safety principles, potential complications, and the need for appropriate emergency planning.
-
Equipment Safety and Troubleshooting: Understand common equipment-related concerns and the importance of following approved procedures when problems arise.
-
Postoperative Monitoring: Review key aspects of patient observation and recovery after surgery.
-
Practical Checklists and a Glossary: Reinforce your understanding with useful review materials and explanations of common robotic surgery terms.
This guide is designed for readers who want to develop a clearer understanding of robotic-assisted general surgery, including:
-
Medical students who want to become familiar with robotic surgical technology and terminology.
-
Surgical residents and trainees preparing for lectures, clinical discussions, simulation sessions, and supervised operating room experiences.
