Print on Demand. This book sheds light on the foundational concepts of music, and their evolution over time. The author draws on ancient Greek traditions to examine the principles of musical proportion, harmony, and dissonance. Using these principles, the author introduces readers to musical concepts such as the monochord, the harmonic series, and the third sound phenomenon. The author asserts that these foundational concepts are universal and play a fundamental role in the development of musical scales and the composition of music. The book's insights are significant as they help us understand the origins of musical ideas and the principles that underlie the beauty of music. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

Ptolemy very juilly fays, 'that it is the bufinefs of contemplation and fcience to fbew that the works of na ture are confiituted according to fome proportion and fettled order, and not at random, or as it were, by chance. But particularly this ought to be done in relation to the finei't of her works 5 Inch as thefe fenfes that approach the neareft to reafcih, viz. The fight and hearing.' Har mon. P. 7. Inthis I have laboured and endeavoured to reduce to a greater degree of facility, an art which has hitherto been involved in-calculations formidable enough to deter every common reader from attempting to underfiand it, calculations that icem to me more ingenious than ufefuil.
