About this Item
2 vols.: xxviii, 260; 280 p. 17 cm. Full leather. Burgundy spine labels and gilt impressing. Corners bumped, a few scuffs. Stained armorial bookplates for Henry Maxwell Esquire, M.P. Burlamaqui was "Councellor of State, and late Professor of Natural and Civil Law at Geneva." This English translation became a standard textbook at Cambridge and many American colleges, including Princeton, Harvard, and the University of Pennsylvania. The first scholarly work on Burlamaqui was written by an American, M. Ray Forrest Harvey, who in 1937 argued that Burlamaqui was well known to America s Founding Fathers and that his writings exerted considerable influence on the American constitutional system. Burlamaqui taught and wrote in the vernacular, not in the traditional university Latin, thereby making natural jurisprudence more accessible and a part of civic education. Bookplate is for Henry Maxwell, 7th Baron Farnham (1799 1868), Irish peer and Member of Parliament; family motto is Je Suis Pret. Vol. I states Fourth Edition, revised and corrected.
