PRINCIPLES OF INFECTION, IMMUNITY, AND HOST–PATHOGEN INTERACTIONS provides a comprehensive and clinically integrated exploration of the complex relationship between infectious organisms and the human immune system. Designed to bridge microbiology, immunology, infectious disease, pathology, diagnostics, therapeutics, and public health, this book moves beyond isolated facts to explain the mechanisms that determine whether microbial exposure results in clearance, colonization, persistent infection, immunopathology, or severe disease.
Beginning with the foundations of microbial biology and host defense, the book examines bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic pathogens alongside the innate and adaptive immune mechanisms responsible for recognizing and controlling them. You will explore physical and mucosal barriers, pattern-recognition receptors, phagocytes, natural killer cells, complement, antigen presentation, T-cell and B-cell responses, antibodies, immune memory, inflammation, tolerance, hypersensitivity, immunodeficiency, and immune regulation.
The text then connects these mechanisms directly to microbial pathogenesis. Detailed discussions explain adhesion, colonization, invasion, toxin production, intracellular survival, biofilm formation, antigenic variation, latency, molecular mimicry, immune evasion, and the balance between direct microbial injury and immune-mediated tissue damage.
You will also gain a practical understanding of modern infectious-disease diagnostics, including specimen selection, microscopy, staining, culture, antigen detection, serology, PCR, multiplex nucleic-acid amplification tests, sequencing, metagenomics, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and interpretation of biomarkers.
A dedicated section on antimicrobial therapy explores antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiparasitic treatment, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles, mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance, multidrug-resistant organisms, stewardship, de-escalation, therapeutic monitoring, and the importance of source control.
Vaccination and prevention are treated as core components of infectious-disease medicine. Topics include immune memory, vaccine platforms, population immunity, immune escape, boosting, infection-control precautions, sterilization, disinfection, outbreak investigation, surveillance, transmission dynamics, emerging infections, zoonoses, One Health, global health, and pandemic preparedness.
The final chapter looks toward the future of infection and immunity, exploring precision infectious disease, host genetics, pathogen genomics, monoclonal antibodies, cytokine-targeted therapy, microbiome therapeutics, bacteriophage therapy, artificial intelligence, systems immunology, computational epidemiology, digital diagnostics, personalized vaccines, and next-generation approaches to host–pathogen science.
Whether you are building a foundation in infection and immunity or strengthening advanced clinical understanding, PRINCIPLES OF INFECTION, IMMUNITY, AND HOST–PATHOGEN INTERACTIONS offers a unified framework for understanding one of medicine's most important relationships: the continuous biological contest between microorganisms and the human host.
Understand the pathogen. Understand the immune response. Understand the interaction that determines disease.
