Item description from seller

A large octavo (7-1/4 X 9-1.2 inches), the first edition thus, with the 8 full-page color plates by Jessie Willcox Smith, as well as the "lamplit" endpapers. Dated 1920, and Previous Owner Josephine G. Paret has dated her signature to top of initial blank Christmas, 1920. "Good" with board corners rubbed. The goblins (called by some "kobolds"), it should be noted, generations ago retreated to the caverns beneath the mountains because "the king had laid what they thought too severe taxes upon them, or had required observances of them that they did not like, or had begun to treat them with more severity, in some way or other, and impose stricter laws." meaning the Rev. MacDonald's ugly, misshapen Goblins would actually be . . . either the Catholic Scots, quite understandably in hiding after the Rising of '45, or else . . . us? Children's. A stout 203 pp., reduced from 55.
