Historian Harvey G Kane provides an updated introduction and historical context including;
- Niccolò Machiavelli’s life
- Il Principe (The Prince)
- Machiavelli and Philosophy
- Chronology
This short book is of political philosophy and strategy that was intended to advise, instruct, and influence the minds of aspiring rulers of the times. Set in the Italian Renaissance, the book is addressed to Lorenzo de’ Medici, the then-ruler of Florence.
Machiavelli offers pragmatic and often controversial advice on statecraft, power, and leadership. Published five years after his death, The Prince has gained him everlasting fame. Some of these teachings have acquired notoriety, and many of his ideas have come to be described by using his name, “Machiavellian.”
Students of political science, history, and philosophy will appreciate the annotations presented in this version, as it is vital to take into account the historical context to fully understand the contents of The Prince.
“The book isn’t a recipe for living, except as the ruler of a principality (or state). The book isn’t full of pithy sayings, except as they exist within larger discussions of complex concepts. The Prince must be considered as a product of its time, not as a blueprint for modern machinations.” Harvey G Kane
Translated by W.K. Marriott in 1908. His translation brings to life Machiavelli's original text, making it accessible to the modern reader.
Niccolò Machiavelli, born in 1469, was a Florentine diplomat, philosopher, historian, and author who lived during the Renaissance Period. Due to political upheaval, he was forced out of public life. It was during this time he started to write, his works included an eight-volume history of Florentine (Istorie Florentine), a series on military maneuvers titled The Art of War (Dell’Arte deela Guerra), as well as a few plays, which were published during his lifetime. His most famous works debuted after his death: Discourses on Livy (1531) and The Prince (1532)
