Elise Bennett accepts the post no one else wants. At the top of the High Spire, hundreds of feet above the mountain valleys, she is ordered to guard an enormous Silver Bell. The rules are simple: never touch it, never interfere with its rigging, record every midnight strike, and remain inside the watch-cabin between tolls. The bell has rung for eighty years. No one knows who rings it.No one is supposed to ask. Then Elise hears a voice inside the silver. At first she believes it is a supernatural entity hiding inside the ancient casting. But the voice knows the history of the Kingsley dynasty. It knows the names of forgotten people. It knows things that no ghost should remember. And eventually, the voice tells her the truth.Prince Cedric Kingsley-the supposedly dead crown prince-is alive inside the bell.Eighty years earlier, during the Great Cataclysm, Cedric sacrificed his mortal life to protect the kingdom. His body and soul were bound into the massive silver vessel, transforming him into a living barrier against an abyss filled with thousands upon thousands of restless dead. Every midnight, the bell strikes, and Cedric absorbs the supernatural force that would otherwise descend upon the kingdom below. The people sleep safely because he suffers in their place. The official histories call him dead. The kingdom has forgotten him.And the Vigilant Council intends to keep the truth buried.Elise soon discovers that her own family is connected to Cedric's sacrifice. The two silver pendants she inherited carry the bloodline of Victoria Beaumont, the woman Cedric once saved. When Elise touches the bell, the ancient prison recognizes her blood and begins feeding upon her memories. Now Elise faces an impossible choice. She can walk away and preserve what remains of her own identity.Or she can stay beside the forgotten prince and risk losing her memories piece by piece, while the Council sends its enforcers to silence both of them.As midnight approaches, the bell becomes a battlefield. The dead rise through the mountain mist. The Council's forces close in. And Elise refuses to hide behind the walls of the watch-cabin while another human being is sacrificed for a kingdom that has forgotten the price of its peace. With a consecrated war-hammer, ancestral silver, and the courage to remember what history erased, Elise breaks the machinery that has imprisoned Cedric. The Silver Bell shatters. The dead fall silent. And after eighty years of darkness, Prince Cedric feels cold air against living skin and sees the sunrise with his own eyes.Elise survives, but the bell has taken pieces of her past that can never be recovered. Yet her memories are not the measure of everything she has become. At dawn, she and Cedric stand together above the ruined Spire, no longer warden and prisoner, but two survivors facing a world that must finally confront the truth of its forgotten sacrifice. The prince inside the bell has returned to the living. And for the first time in eighty years, midnight belongs to no one.
