Pandi-Perumal, is an important book coming at an important time for the increasing number of patients with sleep disorders who are seen in primary care practices. The importance of primary care physicians having more in-depth education and training in sleep medicine has been emphasized in the Institute of Medicine report, 'Sleep Disorders and Sleep Deprivation-An Unmet Public Health Problem,' issued in April 2006. This landmark report estimates that 50 to 70 million Americans chronically suffer from a sleep disorder that interferes with their daily function and has long-term adverse effects on their health and quality of life. Lack of sleep can lead to increased rates of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart attack, and stroke. In addition, one-fifth of all serious car accidents are associated with driver sleepiness. The Institute of Medicine report, after carefully examining and reporting on the evidence, concluded that increased awareness and training in the field of sleep disorders for primary care physicians is urgently needed to help address the increasing unmet needs of large numbers of patients with sleep disorders. Primary Care in Sleep Medicine: A Practical Guide is an excellent book that should help to meet this important need.

The majority of patients that suffer from sleep disturbance receive their medical care in the primary care setting. This book is a clinical text, oriented to the practicing primary care clinician. It provides a state-of-the-art, comprehensive overview of the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders and is endorsed by the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP). This is the first published book to provide evidence-based practice recommendations using the practice parameters that were primarily developed by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Physicians interested in specializing in sleep disorders will find this guide to be an excellent text for board review. In addition, clinicians at any stage of their career will benefit immensely from the straightforward presentation of sleep disorders and their treatment in this timely and informative text.
From the reviews:
"‘A high-quality, up-to-date background that will support the primary care physician in appropriately utilizing sleep diagnostic testing’ as part of clinical practice. ... The topics covered are appropriate for generalist physicians, and include the type of material that one would expect in a book that surveys the field of sleep medicine. ... a useful introductory textbook that will serve as a handy reference for generalist physicians, and it will assist physicians in the recognition, evaluation, and management of patients who have sleep abnormalities." (Robert P Blankfield, Respiratory Care, Vol. 52 (12), 2007)
"Primary Care Sleep Medicine: A Practical Guide ... provides primary care physicians with a suitable introduction to sleep medicine as well as with the basic knowledge reasonably necessary to recognize and treat the most common sleep disorders they will encounter in clinic. ... Drs Pagel and Pandi-Perumal provide a 334-page book that comprises 29 chapters with an index. ... To its credit, appropriate citations from peer-reviewed literature and practice guidelines from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine are scattered throughout the book." (A. Y. Avidan and R. K. Malhotra, JAMA, Vol. 198, 2007)
