About this edition: Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice follows Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy through courtship, misunderstanding, family pressures, and the expectations surrounding marriage and social class in English country society. This Rittenhouse Classics edition belongs to an American series of illustrated literary classics first published by Philadelphia firm George W. Jacobs and continued by Macrae-Smith after it acquired Jacobs in 1925. The twelve color plates connect the edition to an important chapter in the history of illustrated Austen. The volume credits the illustrations to brothers C. E. and H. M. Brock; the Pride and Prejudice plates originated with Henry Matthew Brock’s work for J. M. Dent’s landmark 1898 Jane Austen series, the first Austen edition illustrated in color. Rittenhouse brought these illustrations to twentieth-century American readers in an edition that went through numerous printings. This twelfth printing is undated. Earlier Macrae-Smith printings survive in the brown-and-gold Rittenhouse binding associated with the late 1920s, while this copy has the later dark cloth binding. Rittenhouse editions remained in circulation during the 1930s, and this copy’s October 28, 1945 institutional stamp establishes an upper limit for its production. The circa 1940 publication date given in this listing is an estimate; the available evidence suggests a likely publication period in the late 1930s to early 1940s.…
