18mo (13.5cm). Contemporary brown leather, with 5 gilt rules to spine; plain endpapers; [i]-iv [5]-80, [8]pp; 4 pages of publisher's ads at rear. A straight, sound copy, leather rubbed, with occasional spots of foxing, but largely tight and clean: Very Good. A compendium, intended for young apprentices and indentured servants, of ".practical hints on everyday subjects.imbued with strong Christian moralizing" (ODNB). Topics range through the moral, social, romantic, practical, and financial, including "Irresolution, and indolence," "Choice of a wife," "Servants," "Choice of friends," "Value of time," "Bonds and securities," "Horse-keeping," etc. This popular title went into numerous editions after its first appearance (London, 1740; first American edition printed by Benjamin Franklin in 1749).
