The Hawker Siddeley Harrier is the only VTOL aircraft in the world to have passed through all stages of prototype and pre-series development to series production, and then gone on to serve successfully in the armed forces of several nations. It was the culmination of a flight test and development programme which began with a forerunner aircraft, known simply as the P.1127.
