This study traces the external history of the Bible, focusing on its format, transmission, and the ways scholars and institutions have interacted with it over the centuries. It highlights how manuscript evidence, polyglot editions, and vernacular translations contributed to the Bible’s pre-eminence among world literature and religious thought, while also examining the forces that sought to regulate or suppress its circulation.

- See the rise of major polyglot Bibles and the impact of translations on church life and scholarly study.
- Explore how censorship and printing shaped what people could read, and why the Bible’s history reads like a history of printing and scholarship.
