Author: Illuminated manuscript style Stevenson, who for the last four years of his life made his home on his plantation of Vailima, beautifully situated 600 feet above sea-level, on the mountainside among thick woods, with fine views of the Pacific On their arrival in Samoa from Sydney in September 1890 Stevenson and Fanny lived at Vailima in a rough cabin in the most primitive conditions while work proceeded on clearing the estate and building a suitable house They moved into the new house in April 1891 (it was enlarged in 1893) Stevenson gathered his family around him and lived in patriarchal style, like a clan chieftain, with a number of Samoan servants in both house and plantation, in whose welfare he took the greatest interest The calligraphy, book design, and illumination was executed by the well-known English illuminator and miniature painter Alberto Sangorski (1862-1932), who specialized in illustrating religious texts. Book Resume: Collection of short, one or two page prayers for various occasions which the Stevenson family used during their evening devotions The entire household and neighbours gathered by lantern light, including the "retainers" or servants After the Scripture was read in the Samoan Bible by Lloyd,Robert's step-son, Robert would pray in English from his little book, "interpolating, or changing with the circumstances of the day" They then sang hymns in Samoan and recited The Lord's Prayer, also in Samoan Some of the titles of prayer are: For Grace, For Success, Sunday, In Time Of Rain, and For the Family These short prayers are full of honesty and grace.
