What does it actually mean to pray, and why do Christians keep praying if God already knows what they need?
Prayer is one of Christianity’s most familiar practices and one of the least simple to explain.
Prayer Explained offers an accessible guide to the history, theology, and practice of Christian prayer. Beginning with the prayer traditions of ancient Israel and the way Jesus himself prayed, Paul Abeto explores the Lord’s Prayer, the Psalms, the worship of the early Church, petition, thanksgiving, confession, intercession, silence, contemplation, and the many forms Christian prayer has taken across two thousand years.
The book also addresses the questions that are often harder to answer. What happens when prayer is not answered? Does prayer change God, the person praying, or events themselves? Why do Catholics and Orthodox Christians ask Mary and the saints for intercession while most Protestants do not? Why do some Christians pray for the dead? Is repeated prayer biblical? What are the Rosary and the Jesus Prayer actually doing? How should Christians understand speaking in tongues, healing prayer, silence, meditation, and mystical experience?
Rather than dismissing unfamiliar practices or pretending that every Christian tradition teaches the same thing, Prayer Explained distinguishes between biblical evidence, early Christian practice, later theological development, denominational interpretation, and modern devotional life.
The final chapters turn to practice: how to begin praying, what to do when prayer feels empty, how to deal with distraction and doubt, and why Christian prayer is ultimately not a technique for controlling outcomes.
A clear introduction for readers who want to understand not only how Christians pray, but why they pray the way they do.
