A practical guide for making the most out of your practice sessions, with actionable advice and invaluable resources–all delivered with insight and good humor.
Singers have a poor reputation for practicing–and it’s not our fault. While instrumentalists gain habits and techniques for practicing skills from an early age, most singers start later and have no idea how to master their technical and repertoire progress. Our earliest singing experiences are by ear; we learn to read music and develop musicianship skills at the same time that we are learning our technique and memorizing songs, often in a foreign language! It can be overwhelming, but there are ways to develop practice habits that improve your music learning and help you reach your goals. In this book, you will find easy steps for building your practice routine, from setting intentions to warm-ups to learning music for which there is no recording to evaluating your progress through detailed practice journals. Entering a practice room should be a joy and not a chore–find out how here!
Endorsements:
"This book needs to be in the hands of every singer from high school through undergrad, grad school, and beyond. It is full of practical, important, essential advice and gives you ways of approaching practice that is detailed, but not overwhelming. Every singer needs this!”
–Susan Eichhorn Young, Voice Teacher/Vocal Consultant, NYC & worldwide online
"For classical singers, practicing can at times be mystifying, and at its worst, counterproductive and demoralizing. Joanie Brittingham has created an invaluable guide to help singers approach their practice sessions with purpose, positivity, and a sense of ownership over their instrument."
–Amy Burton, soprano, Voice Faculty at the Juilliard School and the Mannes School of Music
"Practicing for Singers is a must-have resource for singers, voice teachers, and all voice professionals! Author & singer Joanie Brittingham’s book is at once therapeutic and strategic, resulting in a page-turner of a methods book! Brittingham’s roadmap for empowered time management provides a clear path toward measurable improvement, while addressing crucial components of the psychology of practice, ranging from mindfulness to neurodivergence. Whether you’re a voice teacher, an SLP who works with singers, a music therapist, and—especially—a singer of any genre, Practicing for Singers is as necessary as your vocal cords."
–Dr. Peter Thoresen, Pace University MT Voice Faculty, Broadway Star Project, music director, countertenor, and writer
