Item description from seller

xxii, [1], 281 p.; 19 cm. From author's advertisement: `In the method itself (the spiritual and moral application of each passage), he has full confidence; for it in no way conflicts with the results of sound criticism, and is the old method of the Saints, and is infinitely fruitful. And he believes that the writings of the Fathers, and of the great Jansenist commentators (not to mention later writers) supply abundance of material.' (p. xxi) -- From Edward King's preface: `There is evidence in the writings of the Prophets of God's moral government of the world. His eye is over all. The Messianic prophecies.--This is the true end and aim of all the books of the Old Testament. They are to be to us as our `schoolmaster to bring us to Christ.'. This is the true practical end of reading the Scriptures: (1) That we should accept His sacrifice, and be accepted in Him; (2) That in His strength we should follow His example.' (p. x-xii) Good ex-lib. violet cloth, spine ends rubbed. Outer leaves foxed.…
