Item description from seller

Publication: London, Crosby Lockwood and Son, 1896 Formatting: 8vo, pp. [xxxii], 548, 36 plates. Condition Report: Good. The publisher's original maroon cloth binding remains structurally sound and reasonably square, though it exhibits characteristic shelf-wear for a volume of this considerable weight and vintage. This wear includes bumped corners, rubbing along the board extremities, and minor fraying at the extreme head and tail of the spine. The boards present some localized scuffing, minor scratches, and faint spotting to the rear panel, yet the gilt titling and central 'Capio Lumen' vignette on the front board remain bright and legible. The text block edges are markedly age-toned and dust-dulled, particularly along the top edge. Internally, the binding remains secure without detached leaves. The preliminary leaves, notably the title page and preface, display moderate, scattered foxing that occasionally extends into the text margins. The pages are otherwise largely clean and free from major tears or significant blemishes, presenting a solid, readable working copy. Catalogue Note: This is the significantly revised and enlarged fourth edition of Frederick Walter Simms' foundational engineering text, meticulously updated and extended by D. Kinnear Clark. As an authoritative Victorian-era reference on subterranean civil engineering, this edition incorporates substantial new material to reflect the rapid technological and mechanical advancements in tunneling of the late nineteenth century. The volume is extensively illustrated, retaining its educational utility and historical value with thirty-six detailed plates alongside numerous in-text illustrations that document the complexities of historic infrastructure projects. Copies of this enlarged fourth edition in their original publisher’s cloth are increasingly scarce on the open market. Due to their nature as practical working texts, engineering manuals from this period often suffered heavy use in the field, leading to frequent rebinding or total deterioration, making surviving original copies highly desirable for engineering historians. Originally published in the mid-nineteenth century, Practical Tunnelling stands as one of the most comprehensive and influential treatises on Victorian civil engineering and subterranean construction. This substantially expanded fourth edition captures a pivotal era of industrial expansion, detailing the intricate methods, machinery, surveying techniques, and mathematics required to forge railways and underground networks beneath the earth. A fascinating historical document, it offers modern readers a deeply technical glimpse into the monumental public works that physically shaped the modern landscape.…
