Before you choose the tile, window, or heating system, ask what the rest of the house needs from it.
A finish is only one visible layer of a home. Structure, moisture, air, heat, and services all shape whether a renovation choice fits. This visual guide helps homeowners understand those connections and organize the decisions that carry a project from the first survey through closeout.
Start by mapping existing conditions, setting priorities, and defining a workable scope. Then explore foundations and framing, roof and wall assemblies, windows and doors, insulation, ventilation, heating and cooling, plumbing, electrical planning, wet areas, and finishes. Clear diagrams, comparison tools, procedures, and project records make the ideas easier to discuss and apply.
Inside, you can learn to:
- Record what you observe, what remains uncertain, and what needs qualified review.
- Compare materials and systems by fit, moisture exposure, durability, maintenance, and repairability.
- Write a clearer project scope and compare bids against the same work.
- Keep decisions, changes, inspections, closeout details, and a 12-month home-care plan together.
Written for U.S. homeowners planning a renovation, addition, or energy-performance upgrade, this handbook offers a practical way to prepare questions and work with the qualified professionals a project may require. Local codes, climate, site conditions, and existing construction vary; use the book as a planning reference alongside local requirements and professional advice.
Map the house. Define the work. Carry better information into every decision. Open the book, start with the house map, and build your renovation plan one informed step at a time.
