Practical Lessons in the Use of English, Second Book by Mary F. Hyde (1900 Hardcover without dust jacket) Student's textbook of English grammar instruction aid created for students having had 2 or 3 years of school instruction through 8th grade students, developed for use during the last quarter of the 19th century and into early 20th century. During this period, very few people went to high school but most aspired to attain 8th grade graduation from grammar school in order to be considered an educated citizen. The copy for sale is book 2 of a two-volume set. This text is divided into two parts: Part 3, 102 lessons in English grammar, and Part 4, 23 lessons in Business correspondence with a five-page section on common abbreviations. Book has both table of contents and index. Book ends with 14 pages of ads for education textbooks. xii + 226pp + 14pp of ads. Mary Frances Hyde was listed as author of six textbooks under the Elementary English heading of advertisements. Hardcover has blue cloth boards with black ink embossed lettering & patterns on front cover, but no dust jacket. This copy has been wet from base of spine about a third up and across the bottom of pages. Dried without damage to legibility, cleaned with mainly ink mark stains remaining. School work was left in book, included now in plastic bag. Not musky. Interior is complete, binding solid, but stains and writing in book. Prior owner's name and notes in end-pages. This is an original student-used before-1910 copy. Copyrights 1888 & 1889. Printed in Massachusetts. 1900 date on title page implies this copy printed in 1900.
