Print on Demand. This book is a foundational grammar book for a high-level study of German. The author does not present the structure of German grammar in a vacuum; he provides historical as well as comparative insights from related languages. Drawing from his experience as a teacher and a scholar, the author takes into account the needs of the students, as well as the most up-to-date findings in modern linguistics. This book gives the reader a thorough understanding of German grammar, from the basics of the parts of speech, to the nuances of sentence structure, and to the subtleties of language use in different contexts. This book is of primary interest to serious students of the German language, whether for professional or academic reasons. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The ultimate object of learning a living language is to be able to speak it. In this all are agreed. But how to attain so desirable an object, is to many people as yet a much debated question. There are still many people who fancy that a knowledge of a modern language is most easily picked up by a short residence abroad. This is a strange delusion. Surely, it is easier to get your grammar ready-made than to construct it for yourself out of a mass of heterogeneous material, regular and irregular, correct and incorrect, presented all at the same time. For my own part, I have never known a person who, in this manner, had acquired a correct knowledge of any modern language. But I have known many who had acquired a slovenly manner of thinking and speaking, and who had become utterly indifferent to grammatical correctness.
