A bioretention cell that ponds for days, a restored channel that flanks its own structures, a created wetland that dries out by August. These failures rarely come from carelessness. They come from a design assumption, a construction shortcut, or a maintenance gap that nobody connected until years later.
This handbook closes that gap. It treats hydrology, soils, and vegetation as one engineering foundation, then carries that foundation into stormwater practices, stream and floodplain restoration, wetland mitigation, living shorelines, wildlife crossings, urban forests, and contaminated sites, with the sizing checks, specifications, and hold points each one demands.
Critical values sit in clean tables you can verify against your governing manual instead of digging through paragraphs. Photorealistic figures carry only the labels that teach, and decision flowcharts guide the calls that matter in the field.
Unlike references that stop at the drawing, this one follows the project through construction, establishment, monitoring, failure diagnosis, and closeout, the stages where projects are truly won or lost. It is the practitioner's reference for real sites, tight corridors, and changing rainfall.
Put these field-proven capabilities to work:
- Read a site before design begins, spotting headcuts, perched water tables, buried fill, and utility conflicts that derail projects late.
- Size and specify bioretention, permeable pavement, green roofs, and tree trenches with media, underdrain, and pretreatment details that keep them draining.
- Design stable channels and banks using bankfull, sediment competence, and shear stress checks, and recognize when rock is the right answer.
- Build wetlands and living shorelines that meet their standards by grading to hydroperiod and tidal datums rather than to a drawing.
- Navigate permits with confidence, from Section 404 and 401 to floodplain no-rise and coastal consistency, sequenced against real construction windows.
- Diagnose failures accurately, separating design, construction, and maintenance causes before spending money on repairs.
- Hand over assets that last, with as-built records, crew-ready maintenance cards, and funding strategies for decades of stewardship.
- Study the figures in full color with the included color PDF version, ideal for soil color, thermal imaging, and model outputs.
Whether you design, review, build, or maintain ecological infrastructure, this reference equips you with the checks, specifications, and field judgment to get it right the first time, with a full-color PDF version included for the figures where color carries the meaning.
