Every parent has said “be careful.” But vague warnings rarely prepare a child for the moment when an unfamiliar adult approaches, a friend pressures them into something risky, a phone distraction pulls their attention away, or something suddenly goes wrong.
Practical Guide to Raising Street Smart Kids turns child safety from a list of warnings into a practical system of habits, responses, and repeated practice.
Instead of teaching children to fear strangers or become paranoid, this book shows parents how to build awareness, recognize concerning behavior, establish healthy boundaries, respond quickly, find help, and trust their own judgment.
Inside, parents will discover how to:
- Build everyday awareness without creating unnecessary fear or hypervigilance
- Teach children to evaluate behavior rather than judge people by appearance
- Recognize inappropriate approaches, manipulation, grooming patterns, and common lures
- Create safe-spot maps and teach children how to identify places where they can get help
- Use the buddy system intelligently and understand when companionship is not enough
- Establish simple check-in habits that improve communication without becoming intrusive
- Teach children that saying no, leaving, and making noise are acceptable when something feels wrong
- Help children recognize and respond to uncomfortable body signals and instincts
- Practice escape responses so children are less likely to freeze under pressure
- Prepare children for emergencies through simple “what if” conversations and action plans
- Teach age-appropriate boundaries with trusted adults, authority figures, friends, and strangers
- Apply the same protective principles to gaming, messaging, social media, privacy, and online contacts
- Help children resist peer pressure, group risk-taking, dares, and unsafe decisions
- Give children short conversation scripts they can actually remember when stressed
- Maintain protective habits without turning parenting into constant surveillance or anxiety
The heart of this approach is simple: awareness is built, judgment is practiced, and preparation creates confidence.
Your child does not need to predict every possible danger. They need practical responses they can remember and use when circumstances change.
This book gives parents concrete exercises, role-playing ideas, conversation prompts, safety routines, and behavioral strategies that can be integrated into ordinary family life.
The goal is not to raise fearful children.
It is to raise capable children who can notice what is happening around them, recognize when a situation feels wrong, set firm boundaries, seek help, and act without waiting for permission.
If you want to replace repeated warnings with practical preparation and help your child become more confident, aware, and capable in the real world, this book gives you the framework to start.
Read it, practice the exercises, rehearse the responses, and turn everyday moments into opportunities to build lifelong judgment.

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
