Tightly bound in maroon cloth with gold titles. Very slight slant to spine and minor edge wear. The text includes numerous color and B/W illustrations of minerals, diagrams of technical mining tools and a fold out chart titled "Diagram for Calculating the Depths of Shafts". The publisher's book catalog is in rear. There is light wear to endpapers otherwise contents are bright. This copy is from a 19th Century private lending institution, the Mercantile Library of New York (Astor Place). There is a bookplate, a handwritten number and Mercantile Library stamp on the title page and some of the internal pages. There are no other indications of the library's ownership.
